Louisiana elections in 2027 and 2028

In 2027 Louisiana elects its governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, insurance and agriculture commissioners and the full legislature. The governor's race still uses Louisiana's open primary, where all candidates run on one ballot; the new closed party primaries that began in 2026 apply to Congress and some other offices. In 2028, Sen. John Kennedy's Class 3 seat is on the ballot.

What field programs in Louisiana need to know

Two different primary systems now run side by side in Louisiana, so a campaign plan has to follow the right calendar for each office. About a third of Louisianans are Black, and the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas are the largest population centers for statewide field programs. Louisiana's congressional map has also been in court after the Supreme Court's 2026 Louisiana v. Callais decision, which can change district lines.
