How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Social Media Manager?

2026 market ranges for freelancers, agencies and in-house staff, what a monthly package should include, cost per post, and how to compare quotes.

Hiring someone to manage your social media typically costs $500 to $5,000 a month in 2026 when you work with a freelancer or agency on a monthly package, according to WebFX's 2026 pricing guide. Full-service agency retainers usually run $3,000 to $20,000 or more a month, per Hootsuite (2026). Hiring a full-time employee costs more once salary and benefits are counted: the two closest federal occupations had median pay of about $75,000 to $79,000 a year in May 2025, before benefits. These are market ranges, not Leo Operations prices, and ad spend is almost always billed separately.

Social media management cost per month

Monthly cost depends on three things: how many platforms are managed, how much original content is created, and how much strategy, community management and reporting is included. Here is how the main options compare.

OptionTypical 2026 costSource
Freelancer, hourly (global marketplace)$14 to $35 an hourUpwork
Freelance marketing consultant, hourlyAbout $65 to $150 an hourHootsuite, June 2026
Monthly package from a freelancer or agency$500 to $5,000 a monthWebFX, February 2026
Agency retainer$3,000 to $20,000+ a monthHootsuite, June 2026
Enterprise social programs$10,000 to $25,000+ a monthHootsuite, June 2026
Paid social ad management (separate from ad spend)$650 to $6,000 a monthWebFX, February 2026

The gap between a $14 marketplace rate and a $150 consultant rate reflects different work. Marketplace rates include freelancers worldwide at every experience level. Higher rates usually come with strategy, original content, community management, ads and reporting. When two quotes look far apart, they are often describing two different jobs.

How much does it cost to hire a social media manager?

You have three ways to hire: a freelancer, an agency, or an employee. Each has a different cost structure.

Freelancer

A freelancer bills by the hour or by a monthly retainer. Upwork lists typical rates of $14 to $35 an hour for social media managers on its platform (Upwork). Freelance marketing consultants usually charge around $65 to $150 an hour, according to Hootsuite.

A freelancer works well for a single brand on one or two platforms, especially when the freelancer is also a strong writer or designer. The limits show up in coverage. One person has a fixed number of hours in a month, and if that person is sick or booked elsewhere, posting can pause.

Agency

An agency usually charges a monthly retainer that covers a team: a strategist or account lead, a content creator or designer, and someone who schedules, monitors and reports. Hootsuite puts agency retainers at $3,000 to $20,000 or more a month, depending on scope and team size. WebFX, a large U.S. agency, lists its own social media management service starting at $3,150 a month in its 2026 guide.

A retainer pays for a team. Many agencies produce photo, video and graphics in-house, cover vacations, run ads alongside organic posts, and keep a consistent brand across several platforms.

In-house employee

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a separate category for social media managers. The two closest occupations are public relations specialists, with a median annual wage of $74,750 (May 2025), and market research analysts, with a median of $78,760 (May 2025). BLS lists monitoring and responding to social media among public relations specialists' typical duties.

Salary is not the full cost. In June 2026, benefits made up 30.0% of private employers' compensation costs, according to BLS. Using that share, a $74,750 salary represents roughly $106,800 in total compensation, or about $8,900 a month (our calculation). That figure does not include software, equipment, training or the cost of photo and video production.

What is included in social media management?

A complete monthly package should spell out each of these. If a quote leaves one out, ask whether it is included, extra, or not offered.

  • Strategy and calendar. Goals, audiences, platforms, posting frequency and a monthly content calendar approved in advance.
  • Content creation. Captions, graphics, photos, short-form video and Stories. This is where most of the cost difference between packages sits.
  • Scheduling and publishing. Posting at the agreed times on each platform, in the right format and size.
  • Community management. Replying to comments and messages and flagging anything that needs a staff answer. About three-quarters of consumers expect a brand to respond on social within 24 hours, according to the 2025 Sprout Social Index.
  • Profile setup and upkeep. Bios, links, cover images, highlights and business details kept current.
  • Reporting. A monthly report with reach, engagement, follower growth, link clicks and what the team will change next month.
  • Paid social (optional). Ad creative, targeting and budget management. Ad spend goes to the platform and is billed separately from the management fee.

Social media management cost per post

Some providers price by the post instead of the month. WebFX puts content creation at $40 to $150 per post in 2026, with some businesses spending up to $8,000 a month on custom content and graphics.

Per-post pricing is easy to compare, but the post type matters more than the count.

Post typeWhat drives the cost
Text with a stock or template imageWriting time and a quick design pass
Custom branded graphicDesigner time, brand rules, revisions
Carousel (several slides)Each slide is a design, plus a story across slides
Photo from a shootThe shoot itself, editing and selection
Short-form video (Reel, TikTok, Short)Filming, editing, captions, music licensing

A package of 12 polished posts a month with original photo and video will cost more than 30 template posts, so the two are not comparable on post count alone. Professional visuals carry much of the weight on social, which is why we wrote a separate guide on professional social media graphics.

Social media management packages

Most providers sell tiered packages. Names and prices vary, but the structure is consistent. The table below describes what each tier commonly includes in the market. It is a description of common package structures, not a price list.

Package tierPlatformsContentCommunity managementReporting
Starter1 to 2Mostly graphics and captions, a few posts a weekBusiness hours, comments onlyMonthly summary
Growth2 to 4Graphics plus some original photo or short videoComments and messages, dailyMonthly report and review call
Full service3 or moreRegular original photo and video, Stories, campaignsDaily, with escalation rulesMonthly report, quarterly strategy review
Full service plus ads3 or moreSame, plus ad creativeSameOrganic and paid results together

When you compare packages, convert each one into the same terms: platforms covered, number and type of posts, whether original photo and video are included, hours of community management, and what the report shows.

What affects the price

  • Number of platforms. Each platform has its own formats and audience. WebFX estimates $500 to $5,000 a month per platform when several are managed.
  • Original video. Short-form vertical video is the most time-intensive content to make well. A package with weekly original video costs more than one built on graphics.
  • Industry and approvals. Healthcare, finance, government and political accounts often need legal or compliance review before anything posts, which adds time.
  • Response coverage. Evening and weekend monitoring costs more than business-hours coverage.
  • Ads. Ad management is a separate service from organic posting. WebFX lists ad creation and campaign management at $650 to $6,000 a month in 2026, not including spend.
  • Tools. Scheduling software ranges from free to hundreds of dollars a month. Meta Business Suite is free for Facebook and Instagram. Buffer's paid plans start at $5 a month per channel, and Hootsuite's plans start at $99 a month (2026). Ask whether tool costs are included in the quote.

How to judge a social media management quote

  1. Ask for a sample month. A real calendar with post types, platforms and dates tells you more than a list of features.
  2. Look at their own work. Ask for two or three accounts they currently manage, with permission, and look at the last 30 days.
  3. Confirm who does the work. Find out who writes, who designs, who films and who replies to comments.
  4. Check what "content" means. Template graphics, original design and original video are three different price points.
  5. Read the reporting sample. A good report explains what happened and what will change. A screenshot of follower counts is not enough.
  6. Clarify ownership. You should own your accounts, logins and the content you paid for. Make sure your business holds the admin role on every account.
  7. Separate ad spend from fees. Get the management fee and the ad budget as two line items.
  8. Check the term and exit terms. Some agencies ask for a minimum term. Know the length and the notice period before you sign.

How much should a small business spend on social media management?

A small business managing one or two platforms usually falls toward the lower part of the $500 to $5,000 monthly range that WebFX reports for 2026. Agency retainers, per Hootsuite, start around $3,000. The right number depends on how much of your new business comes from social media and how much original content you need.

A practical way to set the budget is to start from the job. Decide which platforms your customers use, how often you need to post to stay visible, and whether you need original photos and video. Then price that scope with two or three providers. WebFX's 2026 guide says businesses typically put 5% to 25% of their overall marketing budget toward social media management.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a social media manager?

A freelancer typically costs $14 to $35 an hour on global marketplaces such as Upwork, while freelance marketing consultants charge around $65 to $150 an hour, per Hootsuite (2026). Monthly packages from freelancers and agencies usually run $500 to $5,000, and agency retainers $3,000 to $20,000 or more. A full-time employee costs roughly $75,000 to $79,000 a year in median salary before benefits, based on the closest BLS occupations.

How much do social media managers usually charge?

Most social media managers charge either an hourly rate or a monthly retainer. Hourly rates range from about $14 on freelance marketplaces to around $150 for experienced consultants. Monthly retainers for small and midsize businesses commonly fall between $500 and $5,000 in 2026, per WebFX.

What is the social media management cost per month for a small business?

A small business managing one or two platforms usually falls toward the lower part of the $500 to $5,000 monthly range WebFX reports for 2026. The price rises as you add platforms, original video and daily community management. Ad spend is billed separately. Use the scope of work, not a round number, to set the budget.

What is the rate for a social media manager?

The rate depends on the hiring model. Upwork lists typical rates of $14 to $35 an hour on its marketplace, Hootsuite puts freelance marketing consultants at around $65 to $150 an hour, and BLS reports a median salary of $74,750 for public relations specialists, the closest federal occupation (May 2025).

How much does social media management cost per post?

WebFX puts content creation at $40 to $150 per post in 2026. Simple text and template posts sit at the low end. Custom graphics, carousels and short-form video cost more because each takes more design, filming or editing time.

Are social media management packages worth it?

A package is worth it when it covers the full job: strategy, original content, community management and reporting, at a frequency your audience notices. Compare packages by converting each one into platforms covered, number and type of posts, response coverage and reporting. A package that only schedules posts is a different service from one that creates original content.

Does social media management include ads?

Usually not. Organic management and paid ad management are often priced separately, and ad spend is paid to the platform on top of either fee. Ask for the management fee and the ad budget as separate line items.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer usually has a lower monthly price for a narrow scope, such as one platform with graphics and captions. An agency costs more but brings a team that can cover strategy, design, video, ads and reporting without gaps. Compare them on the same scope of work.

How Leo Operations approaches this

Leo Operations runs social media management, content creation, digital ads, websites, email and SMS for businesses, nonprofits, churches and campaigns nationwide. Our design team, led by Partner and Creative Director Morganne Norwood, produces social graphics, event campaigns and church media, and we produce short-form vertical video for clients, including weekly sermon clips for Cathedral of Praise in Nashville.

We start with the scope, not a package name: which platforms matter for your audience, how often you need to post, and how much original photo, video and design the plan calls for. Because we film, photograph and design in-house, the content on your accounts comes from the same team that plans it. For organizations that want steady visuals without a full retainer, we also offer monthly content partnerships for one, three or six months.

If you are pricing social media management, email us your platforms, your goals and your budget range, and we will tell you honestly what it takes. Learn more on our social media management page.
