How Much Does Website Design Cost for a Small Business?

2026 market prices for website builders, freelancers and agencies, the ongoing costs owners forget, the seven steps of web design and what every small business site needs.

A professionally designed small business website typically costs $500 to $10,000 or more from a freelancer and $3,000 to $30,000 or more from an agency, according to WebFX's 2026 pricing guide. Thumbtack's national data puts the average website developer job at $1,057, with most between $614 and $1,817 (in a February 2025 guide), which reflects smaller, simpler projects. U.S. web design firms on Clutch most often bill $100 to $149 an hour in 2026. After launch, plan for hosting, your domain name and regular maintenance. These are market ranges, not Leo Operations prices.

If you are still deciding whether a professional site is worth it, start with our guide on why a professional website matters.

What is the average cost to have someone design a website?

The price depends on who builds it and how much the site has to do. A five-page brochure site for a local service business and an online store with hundreds of products are different projects, and the price reflects that.

Clutch reports that the average reviewed project on its platform was $38,105, while most projects cost less than $10,000. That gap tells you a few large builds pull the average up. For a typical small business, the median-style figures are the more useful guide.

Website design cost per hour

Hourly rates explain much of the spread in project prices.

Website builder specialists (Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow, Shopify)$25 to $49Clutch, 2026
U.S. web design companies$100 to $149Clutch, 2026

For context, the median pay for web developers and digital designers in the U.S. was $99,520 a year, or $47.85 an hour, in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A company's hourly rate is higher than an employee's wage because it covers project management, design, testing, software, insurance and the time spent on revisions and support.

Website builder, freelancer or agency

Website builders

Platforms such as Squarespace and Wix sell monthly plans that include hosting and templates. When we checked in October 2026, Squarespace plans ran $19 to $99 a month billed annually, and Wix plans started at $17.77 a month billed yearly. Both include a free domain for the first year on qualifying annual plans.

The subscription is the platform, not the design. The template still needs a layout planned around your customers, written copy, real photography, a clear path to call or book, search basics and testing on phones. That work is a large share of what makes a website useful, and it is the part a designer is hired to do. Many professional designers build on these same platforms, which keeps future updates simple for your staff.

Freelancers

A skilled freelancer can produce an excellent small site. Ask who writes the copy, who supplies the photos, who handles hosting and what happens if you need a change six months after launch. With one person, availability is the main variable.

Agencies and design studios

An agency or studio brings strategy, design, writing, development, photography and testing under one contract. That costs more, and it suits businesses where the website does a lot of work: lead generation, online booking, ecommerce, or a brand that has to look as established as it is.

What drives website design cost?

  • Number of pages and templates. A home page, about, services, contact and a few service pages is a small site. Dozens of unique layouts is a larger one.
  • Custom design versus a template. A tailored design takes more hours than a lightly adjusted theme.
  • Copywriting. Many quotes assume you supply the words. Professional copy written for customers and for search adds cost.
  • Photography and video. Real photos of your team, location and work show customers who you are in a way stock images cannot. Budget for a shoot if you do not have current images.
  • Features. Online booking, payments, ecommerce, member logins, event calendars, forms that feed a CRM and multiple languages each add work.
  • Search engine basics. Page titles, descriptions, headings, image text, a sitemap and Google Business Profile setup.
  • Accessibility. The WebAIM Million 2026 report found detectable WCAG accessibility failures on 95.9% of the top one million home pages. Building to accessibility standards from the start is simpler than fixing a site later.
  • Content migration. Moving pages, blog posts or products from an old site takes time.
  • Revision rounds and timeline. More review rounds and rush deadlines raise the price.

Ongoing website costs: hosting, domain and maintenance

A website is not a one-time purchase. Budget for these every year.

Maintenance covers software and plugin updates, security monitoring, backups, small content changes, broken-link checks and keeping hours, staff and service pages current. Some owners pay by the hour as needed; others pay a monthly care plan. Either way, assign someone to it. An out-of-date site, such as one listing last year's holiday hours, can send a customer to a competitor.

Register the domain in your own business name and keep the login. That step protects you if you ever change designers.

Small business website design: what every site needs

  • A clear headline that says what you do and where. A visitor should understand your business in a few seconds.
  • An obvious next step on every page. Call, book, request a quote, buy or visit. Put a tap-to-call phone number at the top on phones.
  • Mobile-first design. In September 2026, 49.1% of U.S. web traffic came from mobile devices, per StatCounter. Design and test for phones first.
  • Fast loading. Google's Core Web Vitals call a page's main content load good within 2.5 seconds, with responses to taps in 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Service pages. One page per main service, written in the words customers search for.
  • Real photos and proof. Your team, your work, reviews and any certifications or awards.
  • Contact details that match everywhere. Name, address and phone should match your Google Business Profile and directory listings.
  • Accessibility. Readable contrast, image descriptions, labeled forms and keyboard navigation, following the WCAG standard.
  • Security and privacy basics. HTTPS on every page, a privacy policy, and spam protection on forms.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking. So you know how many calls, forms and bookings the site produces.

What are the 7 steps in web design?

Designers describe the process in slightly different ways, but most professional projects follow these seven steps.

  1. Goals and discovery. Define who the site is for, what you want visitors to do and how success will be measured. Review competitors and your current analytics.
  2. Scope and planning. List every page, feature and integration, set the budget and timeline, and agree on who supplies content.
  3. Sitemap and wireframes. Map how pages connect, then sketch the layout of key pages before any visual design.
  4. Content. Write the copy, gather or shoot photos and video, and collect reviews, team bios and service details.
  5. Visual design. Apply your brand colors, fonts and imagery to the wireframes, starting with the home page and a service page.
  6. Development and testing. Build the site, then test on phones, tablets and desktops, in multiple browsers, for speed, accessibility, forms and links.
  7. Launch and ongoing care. Connect the domain, set up redirects from old pages, submit the sitemap to search engines, turn on analytics, then maintain and improve the site over time.

Content is the step that most often delays launch. Starting it early, alongside design, keeps the timeline on track.

How to get an accurate website quote

  1. List the pages you need and any features (booking, payments, store, forms, calendar).
  2. Share two or three sites you like, and say what you like about each.
  3. Say who will write the copy and whether you have current photos.
  4. Name your launch date and any fixed deadlines.
  5. Ask what is included after launch: training, support, hosting and maintenance.
  6. Confirm in writing that you own the domain, the content and the finished site.
  7. Share your budget range so the designer can recommend the right scope.

How much does website hosting cost?

Basic web hosting averages around $8 a month, per Thumbtack's 2025 guide. Website builder plans such as Squarespace ($19 to $99 a month billed annually, October 2026) bundle hosting with the platform. Larger sites with heavy traffic or ecommerce need more powerful hosting and cost more.

Can ChatGPT build me a website?

AI tools can draft copy, suggest layouts and generate code, and many website builders now include AI features. A business site still needs accurate information about your services, real photos, clear calls to action, accessibility, testing on phones and someone accountable for keeping it current. Those decisions need people who know your business and your customers.

What should a small business website include?

At minimum: a clear headline, service pages, an about page with real photos, reviews or proof, contact details that match your Google Business Profile, a clear call to action on every page, fast mobile performance, accessibility basics, HTTPS and analytics. Our guide on why a professional website matters covers this in more depth.
